TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Cough. Sore throat. (see Ingestion).
    Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. (Further see Ingestion).
    Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain.
    Safety goggles, or face shield.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Elevated body temperature. Sweating. Ataxia. Loss of appetite. Shortness of breath. Laboured breathing. Weakness. Headache. Nausea. Vomiting. Abdominal pain. Dizziness. Drowsiness.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment (extra personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs. See Chemical Dangers. Well closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
WHITE OR TAN FLAKES OR POWDER , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic and corrosive fumes including hydrogen chloride and dioxins. Reacts with strong oxidants, causing fire and explosion hazard.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV not established.

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20░C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the cardiovascular system and central nervous system. Exposure at high levels may result in unconsciousness or death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis (chloracne). The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Tumours have been detected in experimental animals but may not be relevant to humans (see Notes).
    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 25░C: 33
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. The substance may cause long-term effects in the aquatic environment. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.
    N O T E S
Humans are generally exposed to technical grade of the substance which usually contain toxic microcontaminants such as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Do NOT take working clothes home. Also consult ICSC #0069 (Pentachlorophenol).
